Latinos In Science

Who We Are?

Latinos In Science has had a long history in the University of California, Riverside. Starting in the Mid 1970's, Latinos in science has been an advocate for minority students in the Inland Empire and has since then sought to spread its influence to a much broader area. We believe that although much progress has been made in diversifying our universities their exists a very visible gap in the number of minorities, primarily latinos, accepted each year to universities in the United States. Among these universities there exists an even greater disproportion of minority students that enter into the field of science. In an effort to increase the ratio of minority students in the sciences we have taken it upon ourselves to go out to local schools and try to motivate students to study hard and apply to as many universities as they wish. Our tactics include: 1) Science demos designed to invoke curiosity, 2) Presentations regarding universitarian requirements and procedures to apply to various universities, 3) Presentations for parents of minority students (in spanish and english) and many more. We invite everyone to explore our new site and want everyone, regardless of ethnic background, to be a part of our effort to diversify our universities. Thank You.

What is in our site?

We have provided this site so that we can demonstrate to the world that the work that we do is very important for those who benefit from them. In the site you will find our monthly calendar, pictures and videos of our events and presentations, applications and forms, member biographies. Of course no community service org. site  would be complete without a testimonials and blog page where people can post there experiences with our organization.

Why we do what we do?

We feel that as university students and future professionals in our careers it is our responsibility to give back to the communities that have allowed us to go this far. As a club we also share a united will to provide students with the knowledge and motivation to seek a higher education whether it be junior college, Cal State or UC.
