Maria Alcaraz

President

Hi,
My name is Maria Alcaraz. I am a Senior here at UCR and I am in the sciences aspiring to become a physician in the near future. I hope to become a successful Rheumatologist and maybe also specializing in Infectious diseases or Immunology. I am an outgoing and outspoken person of Mexican descent. I am the first in my family to go to college, and yes it is challenging, but with all these reseources out there, the sky is the limit. I belive that if you really want it with all your heart, it is possible. "Querer es poder!"

Lissette Rios

Vice-President

Hello, my name is Lissette Rios,

I'm a 5th year biology major and registered EMT. I want to see our club expand this year on and off campus, gain more members and of course help inspire more kids to pursue their higher educational goals. I have always loved school and learning and really believe in our organization to bring awareness and aid to underrepresented students. My plans for the future are to earn my PhD, teach at a university and conduct research. I am very much interested in marine science and would like to conduct research that emphasizes the rescue and maintenance of the worlds oceans along with its inhabitants. I am of Mexican-Nicaraguan descent, originally from Norwalk, Ca, the oldest of 3, and the third person in my family to go to college. I would not be graduating this year without the love and support of my family. Some of my interests are: music, museums, spending time with my family, being outdoors, the beach, kickboxing, swimming, reading and writing. I am a very open minded person who is full of passion for the sciences and has a great deal of love and respect for nature.

Paul Chan

Secretary & Webmaster

Paul Chan is fourth year student majoring in Biology at UCR. He enjoys staying active by running, biking, or hiking as it helps him relieve all the stress from school and has always had an interest in healthy living. He was born in Los Angeles. Being raised in a small neighborhood of Northeast Los Angeles called Highland Park has given him the opportunity to experience and embrace many different cultures while growing up. He also loves to work with underserved communities with the help of Latinos in Science. He gives back by advocating for the pursuit of higher education in students of impoverished schools because he believes that education is one of the keys to success (a belief that stems from his mother's guidance). He wishes to help LIS grow to be able to help as many students as possible. He will be the first in his family to graduate from college. He ultimately wishes to become a family physician that works in an under-served community and educate the people there on disease prevention through an active life and proper nutrition.

Martin Gutierrez

Treasurer

Originally from South Central Los Angeles, Martin Gutierrez now attends the University of California, Riverside as a full-time undergraduate student.  He is a second year neuroscience student with a quirky personality and a curious mind. Some of Martin’s hobbies include tutoring kindergarten children at Sunnymead Elementary, being a research assistant for the Positive Psychology Laboratory, and riding his Huffy bicycle around town.  He loves children, family, friends, human interactions and getting A’s.  Martin joined Latinos in Science in order to meet other motivated individuals who want to make a contribution to humanity.  During his time at UCR, Martin wishes to dramatically increase the number of members in Latinos in Science in order to have an equally dramatic increase in the number of minority students who seek higher education.

Eileen Sanchez

Students 4 Students

Hi! My name is Eileen Sanchez and I am a fourth year Biochemistry major and Spanish minor.  I was born and raised in Orange County but moved to Riverside during high school.  My parents are both Mexican, I am the oldest of two girls, and the first person in my family to go to college.  Witnessing first hand the poverty and lack of medical access in my family’s hometown in Mexico and here in California led me to pursue a career in Medicine.   I would like to become a Pediatrician in areas with a high need for medical care.  This way, I hope to not only help medically but also reach out to the many bright children and students who are unaware of the importance of a college education.  I’m also a part of the Medical Scholars Program and of the Health Professions Advising Center. Latinos in Science has given me the opportunity to start influencing students’ lives while being an undergrad at UCR.   I hope we are able to expand this organization and, together with the rest of the members, encourage high school students that pursuing a college education is the best decision they could make.
